Ambiga to head Pakatan bureau?
Speculation is rife that the Bersih chairperson will head the proposed minority affairs bureau but Ambiga denies this.
PETALING JAYA: Speculation is rife that Bersih chairperson S Ambiga will head Pakatan Rakyat’s proposed minority affairs bureau.
“The party leadership has identified her for the post but we are not sure if she would accept the post or perhaps even contest in the upcoming general election,” said a PKR source.
However, Ambiga, who had repeatedly stressed that she would remain neutral, said she was in the dark about the matter.
“She is also under a lot of pressure… if she enters politics, no doubt she would be able to win a parliament seat but she would lose her credibility.
“She has on numerous occasion denied that she would enter politics. She has also denied she would contest in the general election… but at the same time she is also attending functions organised by Pakatan leaders, especially Indian leaders,” said the source.
Speculation that she would head the bureau grew stronger after she shared the stage at a cultural event with several popular Indian opposition leaders in Klang last weekend.
A banner advertising the event carried photos of her alongside Selangor exco member Dr Xavier Jayakumar, Klang MP Charles Santiago, Kapar MP S Manikavasagam, Subang MP R Sivarasa,
Kota Alam Shah state assemblyman N Manoharan and Melawati state assemblyman N Muthiah.
Ambiga: This is news to me
In a related development, another party member claimed that the bureau would not be welcomed by the Indian leaders in the opposition.
The source claimed that the Indian leaders were afraid that their positions would be in threatened if Ambiga entered into the picture.
“It seems like several Indian leaders are working very hard to prevent Ambiga from joining PKR,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ambiga dismissed the speculation as baseless.
“This is news to me. I do not have a clue about such a bureau. I truly have no knowledge about this,” she told FMT.
