Motion submitted to discuss plight of ISA detainees
A motion to discuss the alleged torture inflicted upon detainees picked up under the now defunct Internal Security Act (ISA) was submitted to the Dewan Rakyat speaker’s office today.
The motion, filed under parliamentary Standing Order 18, was submitted by DAP’s Bakri parliamentarian Er Teck Hwa (left).
It pointed to allegations published by Malaysiakini and highlighted by Malaysian Human Rights Council (Suhakam) on torture allegations revealed in notes purportedly smuggled out of the Kamunting detention facility.
Er wants the House to discuss the serious allegations that he says are detrimental to the country’s image.
In his notice, the Bakri MP said ‘Guantanamo Bay-style’ torture was inflicted upon detainees to extract confessions from them.
He also highlighted the plight of Iragi national Sami Hammad, who had told human rights lawyers Farhana Abdul Halim and Fadiah Nadwa Fikri of a similar ordeal he experienced since he was picked up for allegedly being involved in human trafficking.
Sami and several other detainees are currently on a hunger strike to demand that the government releases them or charges them in court.
